How this list works

• Built from the City's business licences: new eating-establishment and take-out licences with no cancel date.
• Each licence is matched to its inspection record by address and name. Toronto Public Health usually inspects a new business before its licence is issued, so a first inspection can be dated before the licence.
• Places already operating before the licence are left out: if the matching inspection record goes back more than a year before the licence date, the licence is likely a renewal, a re-issue or a new owner keeping the name.
• "No inspection record yet" means we found no inspection record at that address under a matching name. The business may not have been inspected yet, or may be recorded under a different name or address.
• A licence date isn't an opening date, and the licensed name can differ from the name on the inspection record. A change of owner can also appear as a new licence.
